Mokoomba

Here was a time - and we can date it to the 1980s, the years immediately following the revolution - when Zimbabwe's music scene rivalled that of Cavern Club-era Liverpool. The Bhundu Boys, Thomas Mapfumo, The Four Brothers, Oliver Mutukudzi, John Chibadura and the Tembo Brothers... The shimmering guitars of all these acts made musical waves far beyond the townships and beer gardens of Harare. Things have been quieter since the post-revolution honeymoon period, but Mokoomba are six young men who demand we re-focus our gaze on Zimbabwe. Despite hailing from a village near Victoria Falls, there's a discernible urban edge to their sound. Often 'pan-African' suggests a band that can't settle on one particular style. This bunch, though, redefine the phrase, creating an irresistible - and coherent - mash-up of different styles that's undeniably of the here and now. Small wonder then that their record Rising Tide was voted in fRoots' top ten albums of last year.
