How a Grenade (MK 2) Works! (100% Animation)

This 3D animated video shows how a grenade works. We look at all of the MK 2 grenade's main components and parts, then discuss how these parts work together to create an explosion. The 3D animation clearly shows the working principle of the grenade.

The MK 2 anti-personnel time-delay fragmentation grenade was in use for almost 50 years and remains one of the most iconic grenades of all time. This type of grenade is often referred to as a pineapple grenade due to its distinct shape.

How long does it take for a grenade to explode? About four seconds depending on the fuse.

SCRIPT
In this video we’re going to look at how an MK 2 grenade works. So lets get started...

Grenade Parts
The MK 2 hand grenade consists of a safety pin, safety lever, and body. The body houses a powder delay fuse and a detonator. Surrounding the detonator and fuse is the explosive element of the grenade, the charge. Underneath the safety lever is a striker, striker spring and primer. Let’s now look at how all these parts work together to create an explosion.

How a Grenade Works
Operating a hand grenade is a relatively simple task, as there are few moving parts. The operator uses one hand to hold the safety lever firmly against the grenade body whilst the other hand is used to remove the safety pin. Providing the operator does not release the safety lever, the grenade will not explode. Once the operator has thrown the grenade, the safety lever will be released, and the striker spring will rotate the striker until it impacts upon the primer. The primer ignites a chemical delay fuse which will burn for approximately four seconds. The delay burns until it reaches the detonator at which point the detonator will explode and cause an even larger explosion as it ignites the charge. And that is how an MK 2 grenade works!
