Our Pet Argiope Aurantia Spiders Zigga and Zigdude -- August/Sept 2015

We show you our Garden Spiders whom we've kept for weeks and named. The first is Zigga, and the second is Zigdude (who isn't a dude after all).

These garden spiders are so fascinating because they eat the middle out of their webs each night, then rebuild the entire center portion with the zig-zag stabilimente portion...hence our spiders' names...Zigga and Zigdude. We've started calling Zigdude Zigchic since she turned out not to be a dude.

The pic on the thumbnail was taken outside on our back patio while the spider was waiting for food. Haniah was standing with her nose about 2 inches from the web. There isn't any glass between her and the spider, which lots of people assume there is. She's not scared because we aren't scared. We are teaching her not to tear down their webs, so not to grab them. But we don't want her to be fearful of these beautiful creatures. They are so neat to watch.
