Down by 2 on the final possession, the Pelicans seemingly had a winning play drawn up. JJ Reddick comes off of 3 screens, being wide open at this moment. Thing is, Ingram was not looking to pass. He decided to take the matter into his own hands, and try to win it. Surprising even Stan Van Gundy who was the commentator for this game.
Contested step back, just rims out and the Jazz hang on despite not playing their best basketball.
So was this the reason for my title? Let me explain. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
First, how did the Jazz manage to come back from a double digit deficit with Rudy and Donovan being a combined 3 for 10 at the half? Let me point out 2 things that caught my eye.
I love the aggressiveness that Jordan Clarkson brought. Look at the way he attacks the basket right from the catch. Using his quickness to catch the defender off guard. He never spends time going side to side, but rather goes straight down to the basket. Right here first he uses the screen, keeps the defender on his back, and ultimately finishes with a nice floater. But then check out what happens moments later. The Jazz run a similar play for him to curl to the middle, and as the Pelicans try to cover, look at this sneaky move that fools the defense, and opens the lane for an easy layup. I love his quickness and energy on this team.
And another guy that I need to point out is Mike Conley. Solid night for him, and you know how the story goes with Conley. Left handed from downtown, but then using his right for those floaters inside. Either way that’s cash money.
Ok moving on to New Orleans. Despite that final possession, Brandon Ingram had himself not a great but a decent game, and at times showed why he is the leading candidate for most improved player this year.
When he decided to put his head down and attack he was unstoppable. That speed at his size is almost impossible to guard. Thing is, his game does suffer from sometimes settling for tough jumpers. And like Charles Barkley says they’re pretty when they go in, but check out how that looks when he jacks up a 3 with a hand in his face 5 seconds into the possession without anyone else touching the ball. Ingram had quite a few tough jumpers in this game and in my opinion he really needs to attack inside a bit more. And ending the game with 20 shots and 0 assists is not a good look. But the Pelicans will definitely take the bad with the good when it comes to him, as he showed how much he can improve in just 1 season.
J.J Reddick and Jrue Holiday both had a great game offensively and New Orleans led most of the way even with Zion on the bench for the majority of the game.
And this is the part that I really don’t like, and I’m sure that Zion agrees with me 100%.
He left the bubble 2 weeks ago and when he came back even tho fully healthy and ready to play, the training staff and medical team put a limit restriction on him because he hadn’t practiced in a few days, so he sat out most of the game in a must win situation where the team is fighting to get to the playoffs.
Dude scored 13 points in the 15 minutes he played. 6 of 8 from the field. You tell me if the Pelicans made the right decision.
Catching the ball with a full head of steam he’s unguardable. Handling defenders like they’re little kids. And when the Jazz tried to deny the pass, look at this speed. The quick turn, and the explosion for the alley oop. It’s just bad for this team that they missed an opportunity at a winnable game. The Pelicans are still very much in the race despite this loss tho, so hopefully we’ll get to see more playing time for Zion in the upcoming games.
The NBA is back baby! That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
