How I Paint Things - Napoleonic French Infantry
When the Third Coalition declared war against France in 1805 with Napoleon as its Emperor, the Napoleonic Wars truly began. The stalwart French Fusilier formed the backbone of French military forces, and though he lacked the dash and élan of the Cavalry and was not perceived generally to be as elite as the Artillery, it was Infantry that carried the day on the battlefield! Purists will notice early that I continually refer to his rifle as a musket, which is incorrect! I managed to correct myself later in the video but it was a little late to fix without completely restarting. Likewise, he's on a round base rather than the more traditional square or rectangular base to rank up as part of a battalion; the round base makes him easier to paint as an individual and is purely a style choice.
I stick largely to Citadel colours for this one and I think the result is pretty good, though in the future I'd probably thin the Nuln Oil with a little medium so it isn't quite such stark shading on his trousers. You may like this finish, so I invite you to experiment! The miniature you see in this video is - no joke - absolutely the first Napoleonic figure I have ever painted, so it was a real treat to get a shot and I'll definitely be revisiting these guys.
