Great arias by Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti, Bizet, and Massenet | Juan Diego Flórez (tenor)
As part of the Dmitri Hvorostovsky Festival 2019, tenor Juan Diego Flórez presents a recital in honor of the legendary Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Performing alongside pianist Vincenzo Scalera, he offers us well-loved arias from masterworks by Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, and Massenet. He is also performing three traditional pieces by Quirino Mendoza y Cortés, Francesco Paolo Tosti, and Agustín Lara. In two of them, Juan Diego Flórez will even accompany himself on the guitar. The encore is the aria “Nessun Dorma” from Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot" – the highlight of any opera evening.
Juan Diego Flórez is one of the most famous and most popular opera singers of our time. Born in 1973 in Lima, Peru, he began to study music at the conservatory in his hometown, and soon after became a soloist with the Coro Nacionál de Lima. From 1993 until 1996, he studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. That summer he gave his operatic debut as Corradino (“Matilde di Shabran”) at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro and played Chevalier Danoise in Gluck’s opera “Armide” at Milan’s La Scala under Riccardo Muti.
Since then, Flórez has sung at all of the great opera houses and concert halls worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, The Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the Zurich Opera House. His albums have won numerous awards, including the Opus Klassik, the Premio Abbiati and the Tamagno Prize. In 2009, Flórez was nominated for Best Classical Vocal Performance in the Grammy Awards for his album “Bel Canto Spectacular”. He loves to accompany his songs and canzones on his guitar.
The Dmitri Hvorostovsky Festival takes place in Krasnoyarsk in honor of Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962–2017), one of the greatest Russian baritones and a son of this city in Siberia. In October 2019, it became an international hub as musicians from all over the world came together to celebrate Hvorostovsky’s life and work. The festival was founded with the support of his parents, Alexander and Lyudmila Hvorostovsky.
