FAA just revealed SpaceX is Landing Starship on Droneship by Legs...
Landing on a droneship has become SpaceX’s signature move—an elegant solution that turned rocket recovery from rare spectacle into routine. It has cut costs, saved time, and reshaped the very rhythm of spaceflight.
Now, with the rise of Starship, this proven method is set to scale. Official plans from SpaceX and the FAA already point to a future where Starship, too, descends on ocean platforms, carrying the dream of full reusability even farther.
But how will this method unlock Starship’s true potential? And when will it take flight?

It is undeniable that in the past year or two, alongside Starship’s impressive test flights, the program has grown substantially in its future operational scope. Several formal proposals now point to an ambitious launch cadence: 44 flights per year from Launch Complex 39A, 25 annually from Starbase, and as many as 76 from SLC-37 in Florida. These numbers signal more than just routine launches—they reflect a broader vision for a high-frequency, global spaceflight system powered by rapid reusability.
Achieving this scale of activity will require more than fast turnarounds and robust production lines. The logistics of recovery and landing must be just as refined, especially given that Starship is designed to be fully reusable from the start. Mechazilla Arms are expected to be the cornerstone of this recovery strategy at fixed facilities. This tower-based catching system is central to enabling rapid refurbishment, helping minimize downtime and maximize launch frequency.

However, Starship’s ambition extends far beyond the limits of land-based infrastructure. According to official documents from the Federal Aviation Administration, SpaceX is preparing for Starship to land in distant regions such as the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Notably, splashdowns will likely be avoided, as they are incompatible with SpaceX’s goal of fast and efficient rocket reuse. Instead, the company appears to be leaning toward a proven solution: droneship landings.
This method has been used extensively with Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, and the advantages are clear. First, landing at sea reduces the risks posed to nearby infrastructure and personnel. The ocean acts as a natural buffer for heat, force, and vibration, and in the event of a failure, it offers a far safer outcome than a land-based accident. Even during successful landings, the water helps mitigate the stress of impact, preserving the rocket’s structure and reducing repair costs.
