Our Purina interns bring fresh perspective, ingenuity and enthusiasm to the checkerboard. And, sometimes these interns grow into Purina leaders who change the industry.

A shining example is Mike Jerina. Mike started with Purina as an intern, and today he manages our equine research unit at the Purina Animal Nutrition Center.

First and foremost, Mike loves horses. He rode his first horse at age 5, has trained and exercised polo horses, apprenticed with a farrier, received his bachelor’s degree in equine reproduction, and his master’s degree in business.

“I always knew my career needed to be with horses,” he says.

Fittingly, Mike now spends each day with our herd of 80+ Quarter Horses, combining his love for horses with science. Mike and his team partner with our Ph.D. equine nutritionists to continually elevate greatness. From palatability testing, blood sampling, and raising growing horses, to trials in our world-renowned exercise physiology lab, research from the unit Mike manages has fueled Olympic medalists, Kentucky Derby contenders and world-champion athletes.
