Everest descriptionMount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level, standing at an official height of 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) according to the most recent joint measurements by Nepal and China (with some sources rounding to 8,848.86 m / 29,031.7 ft, but 8,849 m is the commonly cited figure as of 2026).
It is located in the Himalayas, specifically in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range, right on the international border between Nepal (to the south) and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China (to the north). Its Tibetan name is Chomolungma (meaning "Goddess Mother of the World"), while in Nepali it is called Sagarmatha ("Forehead in the Sky").
Key Facts and Description

Geological origin — Everest is part of the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which continues to push the Himalayas upward by a few millimeters per year.
Appearance — It features a classic pyramid-shaped peak with steep faces, massive glaciers, and knife-edge ridges. The summit is often shrouded in dramatic snow plumes created by high-altitude jet stream winds.
Climbing routes — The two most popular paths are:
South Col route (from Nepal)
North Col route (from Tibet)

Notable features include the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, the Western Cwm, the Lhotse Face, the Hillary Step (though altered by the 2015 earthquake), and the extreme "death zone" above ~8,000 m where supplemental oxygen is typically required.
It attracts hundreds of climbers each spring season, but remains one of the most dangerous and technically demanding mountains in the world due to avalanches, crevasses, extreme cold (down to -60°C / -76°F), hurricane-force winds, and low oxygen levels.

Everest represents the ultimate symbol of human endurance, exploration, and nature's raw power.
