Albemarle Throws Lithium Mud at Elon

Post #Tesla #BatteryDay narratives continue to evolve. Rock Stock Channel digests in less than 12 minutes the significant musings on October 8 at a #Lithium "teach-in" hosted by Jefferies and featuring "#Albemarle, the world's largest #lithium producer and most important Tesla supplier.

Some significant mud thrown at Elon's salty talk about the most irreplaceable element for #EV #Batteries.

Of the four types of lithium deposits and processes - 1. conventional hard rock (spodumene) ,2. conventional brine and 3. still-to-be-proven clay and 4. unconventional brine resources - Lithium President Eric Norris and Chief Technology Officer Glen Merfeld articulate in significant detail why the most preferred and relevant technology to scale battery quality hydroxide is from hard rock resources; and the many "challenges" with clay and other unconventional resources.

Albemarle suggests lower grade/higher cost/unproven technologies - despite their higher hurdle rate for investment - will nevertheless be needed later this decade if Tesla alone achieves anywhere close to its targeted 3 TwH battery capacity within 10 years. While technology breakthroughs could happen, ALB is more of the view that the cost curve for lithium hydroxide must go up high to make these more costly resources economics; which, incidentally would leave ALB with exceptionally high margins from their industry-leading low cost assets.
