Gert Schmitz, German Soldier in WW2: Candid Conversation w/ Teen Historian Solomon Schmidt

Gert Schmitz is one of the few German veterans of World War II who has spoken out about their experiences during the war. As a young boy growing up in Germany, he lived through Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, and at the age of ten, he was drafted into the Hitler Youth. When World War II broke out, Gert became a test pilot in the German air force and later fought on the Western Front in 1945. After being captured by American soldiers, Gert was set free when the war in Europe ended, and during the 1950s, he moved to the United States to start a new life. He served in the U.S. Army and eventually became an aerospace engineer working alongside Dr. Wernher von Braun in Huntsville, Alabama.

It was fascinating to talk with Mr. Schmitz about his harrowing battle experiences and unique perspective of the U.S. space program. I hope you find his stories as interesting as I did!
