Welcome back to the Vault of Honor. 🏛️ Today, we are looking at the peak of IWC’s experimental division: the Big Pilot Shock Absorber Tourbillon Skeleton XPL.

Usually, "Tourbillon" and "Shock Resistant" don't belong in the same sentence. But IWC’s XPL division changed the rules. Using the patented SPRIN-g PROTECT system, this watch suspends the entire movement within the case using a cantilever spring made of Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG). We’re analyzing how this setup allows the tourbillon to survive accelerations exceeding 10,000 g.

Inside the Deep Dive:

SPRIN-g PROTECT: A look at the BMG cantilever spring. Why this "amorphous" metal is the only material flexible enough to cushion a movement and rigid enough to snap it back into place instantly.

Calibre 82915: The heart of the beast. To maximize shock resistance, IWC skeletonized everything—plates, bridges, and even the rotor—to reduce the mass that the spring has to hold.
