April trains in Southeast Iowa - April 3, 2026

After a short day at work, I headed down to southeast Iowa for a weekend with family. Got to spend the afternoon watching trains. At first we start on the west side of Argyle with a parade of intermodal trains, and one eastbound Auto-rack train thrown in the mix. This is one of my favorite spots to watch trains, as it is just east of the ATSF's crossing of the Des Moines River and, as you'll see in the clips, the S-curves make for great views of the trains. After XX train at this crossing, we catch a massive UP trackage rights intermodal heading west. After that, I moved to the east side of town, but along the way, I followed the old Rock Island K&D line and found an old creek bridge still residing in the woods. From there, we arrive at Argyle Interlocking where we catch another handful of freight trains before the rain sets in. But I had one more train I wanted to see: Amtrak's Southwest Chief. Just as the clouds began to darken, I saw the headlight through the trees. In the last clips we see the awesome sight of the Southwest Chief chasing the rain. Lead by a phase 7 locomotive, it was great to see the rain misting off the train as it sped by at track speed. Truly one of the best videos I've caught to date of my favorite train.
