How to Identify Gemstones & Minerals: Specific Gravity
http://www.MoreGems.com -- Steve Moriarty discusses how to identify a mineral or gemstone using a specific gravity test. He shows you the equation and equipment you will need to narrow down the results when trying to identify a mineral or gemstone. This test is particularly useful when he is looking at or purchasing rough gemstones. You can use this test along side a dichroscope and scratch test equipment to give you a more definitive idea of what the material could be. The one thing that he did not mention in this video, is that heavily included pieces could skew the results of a specific gravity test.
Equation to find Specific Gravity:
(Weight of material in air) / (Weight in Air - Weight in Water) = Specific Gravity
A / (A-B) = C
A= Weight of Mineral in Air
B= Weight of Mineral in Water
C= Specific Gravity of Mineral
