Staging in Brisbane, Queensland from 30 September to 9 October 1982, the 12th edition of the Commonwealth Games was the third time that Australia had hosted the event, after Sydney in 1938, and Perth in 1962.
The bidding procedure for the 1982 Commonwealth Games took place during the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, with Lagos, Kuala Lumpur and Birmingham were the other bidding cities. Brisbane was awarded by default of being the only candidate city left at the bid election after Birmingham reversed its decision to submit an application, while Nigeria's boycott of the Montreal Olympics made Lagos' bid lobbying impractical.
The Brisbane Games were also noted by large-scale protests by the Aboriginal rights movement in Australia, which brought to the centre of international media attention the lack of land rights, poor living condition and suppression of personal and political rights in Queensland in particular, and in Australia as a whole. The demonstrations, which were followed by large-scale arrests, are a significant event in the history of the Australian Aboriginal movement, whose had labeled the Games itself as the 'Stolenwealth Games'.
Around 46 Commonwealth nations and territories have participated in the Brisbane Games with a new record total of over 1,550 athletes and 571 officials. Hosts Australia headed the medal table with 107 medals of any color (39 golds and silvers, and 29 bronzes), which led the way ahead of England, Canada, Scotland and New Zealand respectively.
Amidst setbacks, the 1982 Games are still hailed as one of the very best, which made Queensland a bustling region of highways, tunnels, fast trains and stadia. The event paved the way for Brisbane to bid for the 1992 Olympics; they lost to Barcelona, however. But many years later in the 138th IOC Session at Tokyo, the city (without any rival bid due to rule changes by the IOC) did manage to land the 2032 Summer Games, in which its bid featured several venues across Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, and Gold Coast.
