How to get a donkey to cross a bridge

Donkeys and mules learn differently than horses and react to pressure differently. A donkey will brace against pressure and will baulk if they believe what they are about to do will cause them harm. If a donkey has been outfitted with a nylon webbing halter it can be difficult or next to impossible to get them to comply. Using a come-a-long hitch (a 25', two-strand nylon, waxed lariat) and placing it about 2" up from the nose and along the pole behind the ears can be very helpful in teaching a donkey or mule how to "listen" while on the lead. They will protect their nose before they will protect any other part of their body. A good wrangler or trainer can exploit this aspect of the donkey or mule persona. Using the come-a-long hitch properly can cut training times down significantly.
