Purdue Women 62 Duke 45 National Championship March 28, 1999

Led by veteran guards Ukari FIggs and Stephanie White-McCarty, the Purdue women’s basketball team rode a 31-game winning streak into San Jose to beat Duke 62-45, March 28, 1999.
The game was coach Carolyn Peck’s last at Purdue – she became head coach of the expansion WNBA Orlando Miracle the following season.
The matchup with Duke featured a former Purdue assistant, Blue Devils head coach Gail Goestenkors, who coached under Lin Dun at Purdue. In addition, as a result of controversy following Dun’s firing at Purdue in 1996, several Purdue players left the program, with two landing at Duke.
It was a tight game thru the early fourth quarter, when White-McCarty suffered an ankle injury. Her team mates responded with stuff defense and a scoring run that resulted in the 17 point win.
Ukari Figgs was named MVP. Figgs, White-McCarty and Katie Douglas were named to the All Final Four Team.
