[The Doldrums and the Choice of Vitality
A ship hits the doldrums.
For sailors, this part of the ocean was often feared as much as the storms. No wind. No progress. No obvious direction. Just stillness stretching to the horizon.
What do you do when the universe seems to stop moving?
Do you launch a rowboat?
Do you lie on the deck and work on your tan?
Do you wait?
Perhaps this is where motivation enters the story.
There is just one small complication: the brain tends toward comfort. It often avoids challenge. After all, surviving a great storm takes energy. Reaching a spectacular goal requires focus, sacrifice, and determination. You get there, now keep going?
Survival burns hot.
Cruising is recovery.
And recovery has a strange way of becoming permanent if we are not paying attention.
Maybe the answer is not motivation at all.
Maybe it is boundaries.
Maybe it is deciding what matters before the wind returns.
What do you value?
Not next year.
Not next month.
Not when inspiration arrives.
Today.
Perhaps the question is not, "How do I move forward?"
Perhaps the question is, "What do I value enough to take one small step toward right now?"
One glass of water.
One walk around the block.
One honest conversation.
One moment of choosing.
Today's value is vitality.
Not perfection.
Not achievement.
Vitality.
And perhaps that is enough wind for the sails.]
