I’m sharing with you my experience going through the Air Force Officer Selection Board.

So like many of you when I started my process of becoming an officer. I started to study for the AFOQT, I watched as many YouTube videos as possible and tried to get all the tips and advice that was out there.

After I passed the test, the next step for me was going through the officer selection board or interview. I started to talk to others who had recently went through it and tried to watch videos on YouTube to learn better ways to get through it.

However, I noticed there wasn’t many videos about the actual interview. So after I went through mine and was selected, I wanted to create this video that may be able to help the next persons experience a little better.

First of all, I went through the process as already being enlisted so my experience may be slightly different then a ROTC cadet or someone applying from college.

On the day of the interview, I wore my blues and was provided the meeting location. I was briefed on how the process would go and I reported in to the room. On the board was a Major, Captain, and a First Lieutenant . I was seated in front of them and they each took turns asking me several questions.

I’ll be honest, some of the questions took me by surprise and was different then your “normal” interview questions that you may have experienced in the past.

1. When have you been presented with an ethical dilemma and how or what did you do to handle it?
2. What has been the biggest mistake in your career?
3. What has been your greatest achievement in life?

And of course they had some typical interview questions such as
1. Why should we select you for this position?
2. What have you done to prepare yourself?
3. What strengths and weaknesses do you have?

A lot of the questions were related to leadership experience or abilities so the interview questions may be different for a board who’s interviewing prior enlisted compared to those with no military experience.

So being able to relate your experience in school, work, sports, and life in general to a leadership trait is something to keep in mind.

It should go without saying that all this is focused on a leadership position for the Air Force

Here is the biggest thing I learned from it. They don’t want to hear simple yes or no answers. So they ask these open ended type of questions that make you use critical thinking skills and be able to explain and articulate yourself through them.

Everyone isn’t going to have the same answers, but what separates you from the others is the ability to showcase what experience, knowledge and skills you can bring to the Air Force.

The interview is extremely important because you have convinced multiple people who you have never met before that you are who the Air Force needs in a hour or less.

Everyone is coming into this interview with a degree and a passing AFOQT score so you have to be able to separate yourself from the others.

This is all achieved by being confident in yourself. Having that confidence is by practicing and asking yourself though questions. Having friends or coworkers ask interview style questions that may you think before just answering. Going in there with positive body language and knowing that you have done everything you could do to prepare for it.
