The Female Pirate Who Faked Her Death | Jacquotte Delahaye

In honor of Women’s History Month, this short explores the legend of Jacquotte Delahaye — a woman said to have defied the limits placed on women in the 17th century.

According to Caribbean pirate lore, Jacquotte Delahaye was born in Saint-Domingue, known as Haiti today, to a French father and a Haitian mother. After tragedy struck her family, she reportedly turned to the sea to survive and protect her younger brother.

Legend says she faked her own death and lived disguised as a man for several years to escape her enemies. When she returned, her striking red hair earned her the nickname “Back from the Dead Red.”

Stories also claim that in 1656 she led fighters to capture the pirate stronghold of Tortuga, becoming one of the few women said to command a pirate force.

Historians continue to debate whether Jacquotte Delahaye was a real historical figure or a story shaped by pirate folklore.

Fact or fiction — her story is debated, but her legend is part of the storytelling tradition of women who challenged power and refused to be forgotten.

This historical short explores Caribbean pirate lore, women’s history, and the debated legend of Jacquotte Delahaye.
