Helmut Walcha, Bach Well-Tempered Klavier II

You may love or hate him, like his style or not, but Helmut Walcha (1907-1991) is among the top of the list of most important 20th century Bach performers. He proves his technical perfection and extremely focused ideas again here in the second volume of J.S.Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier, played on an Hemsch 1756 harpsichord. Personally, I find it hard to understand the sometimes really negative comments one reads on Walcha's playing. Yes, no doubt I personally play differently -what else would we expect?- but in some cases you would get the impression some people today 'know' how Bach played and expect everything to play accordingly...but a) we don't know -that is part the fascination and the lucky reason players like me still are "in business" and b) it does not explain (to me) why someone feels to comment like that on the performance of a player that at least has his technical skills brought to a level that most of us today should make humble and silent.
Personally? I like Walcha's style of playing very much. Why? Since it brings a relaxed feel to my mind. There is not rush, no hurry, and more importantly, he takes us by the hand guiding us through his vision on the endless forests of Bach's masterpieces. He does it his way, as we don't built anymore like the Bauhaus people did. But it doesn't mean we cannot admire and enjoy their buildings anymore...
