Mr M: Toyota Starlet reborn - Marius Roberts gives you the lowdown

When Toyota South Africa recently revealed the rebirth of the Starlet nameplate, they spent a lot of time explaining how joint ventures and cross-brand partnerships are the driving forces in the automotive sector these days and how they have in fact been around for ages.
Yes, these are things we all know working in the motoring media as we do but its probably less clear to the consumer. But I am used to seeing the sharing of platforms and engines and then each manufacturer packages it, bringing in their unique design elements to give it a unique look and feel. Great example is the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 JV.
But that has not happened here - Toyota have literally taken the badging off of the Suzuki Baleno and stuck their badges on...

So this is going to be a wonderful social study on brand equity because for South Africans, everything keeps going right with Toyota, so expect to see the 'new' Starlet being a sales hit even though it is a 4 year old car that Suzuki has worked hard to move. But it remains a solid offering - way better than the Etios it replaces.
