WPL C14 1:16 Toyota Hilux Crawler Build With WLtoys K989 Receiver: Full Step By Step Tutorial!
Get the kit here: https://www.banggood.com/WPL-C14-DIY-Car-Kit-2_4G-4WD-RC-Climb-Semi-Off-Road-Car-With-Light-Without-Electronic-Part-ATR-p-1248716.html?utm_campaign=4828314_1046285&utm_content=1097&p=NZ29024828314201605E
This WPL-C Toyota Hilux 4x4 crawler is very popular at the moment and I couldn’t resist to buy the kit version. There is also a fully assembled version available, but it has the following drawbacks:
- No proportional steering with horrible noise during cornering
- Very bad motor with no torque
- NiMh battery pack
The kit version has the following advantages:
- Better motor with carbon brushes, brass pinion and much more torque
- Reasonable standard 3 pin RC servo
What else is required to build this kit:
- A 2.4 GHz receiver
- A brushed ESC
- Some 3D printed parts (or glue)
- Some paint to make it looking better
- 5mm super bright LED for the headlights and rooftop lights
- 100 ohm resistor for the rooftop lights
- 220 ohm resistor for the hadlights
- Wire
- Soldering iron
- 100nF ceramic capacitor for motor noise suppression
But which receiver and ESC are suitable for this build? Well I think I found the perfect choice:
- WLtoys receiver with integrated brushed ESC and standard 3 pin servo output: https://www.banggood.com/Wltoys-124-RC-Car-Spare-Parts-Receiver-Box-A202-84-p-1045933.html?utm_campaign=4828314_1046285&utm_content=1097&p=NZ29024828314201605E
- It is used in the following WLtoys cars: K989, K969, A232, K999, P929 etc
- It is very low profile, because the servo header is mounted horizontally. So it fits without a problem below the original cover under the bonnet.
- It was left over from this project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytkMri8LXiE&t=3s
I also have tons of WLtoys transmitters lying around. So I used the transmitter of a 20402 monster truck . It is perfect for a crawler because it has a potentiometer, which allows to adjust the top speed
Of course you could also use my DIY 2.4GHz Arduino „Micro RC“ system:

And yes: this guide also applies to the WPL B-1 and B-24 military trucks
