Israeli troops at the border fire into Gaza

Israeli artillery stationed next to the Gaza border pounded targets in the Palestinian territory as airstrikes continued in the latest outburst of Middle East violence that has seen violence raging across Israel after weeks of protests in Jerusalem.

Despite diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis hundreds of rockets are still being exchanged.

Israeli media are reporting that the army is charting plans for a possible ground invasion of Gaza.

So far the fighting has seen barrages of rockets fired from Gaza and airstrikes, drone strikes and shelling from Israel.
