Join Maria and I as we study the present simple. Don't forget to read the notes below. See you in class!
*****
In English the present simple is used to describe things in general, or things that repeat. For example;
The year is 2014.
They are first every Monday.
Regular and irregular verbs
The only difference between regular and irregular verbs is their spelling when we conjugate them. Regular verbs follow a pattern for their spelling, and irregular verbs do not.
So the verbs in the top group are infinitives, which means we don't conjugate them, and we add an "s" to the end of the verbs in the bottom group.
With irregular verbs, the verbs in the bottom group still end in "s", but we have to modify the spelling.
So, we only have two types of conjugation to remember! Conjugating verbs in English is easy!
NEGATIVES AND QUESTIONS
In the last section we learnt about conjugating verbs in the present simple, but what about making negatives or questions?
First, negatives. As you can see, we use an auxiliary to indicate the negative. An auxiliary is a word that doesn't mean anything, it just indicates the tense, mood and voice of other verbs. For the top group we use don't and the for bottom group we use doesn't. Here are some example sentences:
I don't have a great life
We don't make little things
She doesn't get old
Next, we have questions. So you can see that we also use an auxiliary to make questions, and the auxiliary goes before the subject. Here are some example sentences:
Do I do other things?
Do they have little hands?
Does it say old man?
Remember that this applies to all regular and irregular verbs, except be.
