Chevrolet has just added a brand-new electric SUV to its global lineup—but with a twist. After the original was phased out, Chevrolet brought the Captiva back—this time built on the Chinese Baojun 530 platform. Social media teasers from GM Brazil reveal unmistakable similarities between the Captiva EV and the Wuling Starlight S. That includes the sleek LED front lighting, vertically stacked headlights, and a somewhat conservative grille design—yes, a grille, even though this is an electric vehicle. It’s a clear departure from the minimalist, grille-free look we’ve come to expect from EVs, perhaps to maintain familiarity in markets where EV design language is still new.

Move to the rear, and the resemblance to the Wuling Starlight S becomes undeniable. From the tailgate shape to the black bumper detailing, it’s nearly a one-to-one match. However, Chevrolet has made minor tweaks to help the model align with the Bowtie brand identity, giving it just enough distinction for badge-conscious buyers.

Inside, we’re still waiting for a full reveal, but the Chinese twin offers some hints. If the Wuling’s layout is retained, expect a clean dashboard, large infotainment screens, and an emphasis on practicality over premium. After all, this SUV is aimed at cost-conscious families and first-time EV buyers.

Chevrolet has not yet disclosed the official technical specifications for the Captiva EV, but if it mirrors its Chinese counterpart, the SUV could feature a driving range of up to 317 miles and an acceleration time of 0 to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds. Not bad for an affordable electric crossover. Charging is just as quick—with DC fast-charging capabilities allowing the battery to go from 30 to 80% in just 20 minutes.

As of now, the Captiva EV is undergoing final homologation testing across various countries, where Chevrolet says it is conducting “extensive series of tests and validations.” Pricing details remain under wraps, but one thing is clear—Chevrolet is preparing to make a big splash in the affordable EV market across non-US territories.

While American buyers might be left out of the Captiva EV story, this electric crossover signals an important strategy for GM: leveraging Chinese EV platforms to quickly expand its footprint in emerging markets. By offering global customers modern tech, decent range, and a familiar badge, Chevrolet is positioning itself as a serious contender in the fast-growing electric segment beyond the borders of North America.
