PAU Ludhiana developed a new dual-purpose single-cross maize hybrid, PMH 17 #Maize #Silage

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana has developed a new dual-purpose single-cross maize hybrid, PMH 17, for both grain and silage production during the Kharif season. This is the first dual-purpose maize hybrid developed by PAU, aimed at improving farmers’ profitability, supporting crop diversification, and strengthening sustainable farming systems in Punjab.

PMH 17 is a high-yielding hybrid with tall, vigorous plants, broad erect leaves, and long attractive cobs bearing yellow-orange grains. The hybrid matures in about 96 days and can produce around 25 quintals grain yield per acre under recommended agronomic practices.

Due to its luxuriant vegetative growth, superior biomass production, and good silage quality, PMH 17 is highly beneficial for dairy farmers. The grains contain more than 65% starch, making the hybrid suitable for ethanol industry utilisation as well.

Farmers are advised to complete sowing preferably by 20 June to avoid losses from heavy monsoon rains and excess moisture. PAU recommends bed sowing using a pneumatic planter for proper plant spacing, better germination, effective drainage, and reduced lodging and waterlogging under rainy conditions.

Approximately 10 kg seed is required per acre. The seed is available at ₹240 per kg in 5 kg and 10 kg packs at the PAU Ludhiana Seed Shop (Gate No. 1) and all Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs).

Adoption of PMH 17 can help farmers achieve higher productivity, better income, improved fodder availability, and contribute significantly to Punjab’s crop diversification and natural resource conservation efforts.
