Roughing In Galvanized Steel Laminate Fast, Cheap, and Importantly Mold Resistant for Forest Life.
Sometimes you just need to get it done—and galvanized steel siding is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to rough in a wall when you're building off-grid.
In this video, I’m putting up sheets of galvanized steel as quick siding on one of the exterior walls of my 3x3 meter forest structure here in Nova Friburgo, Brazil. The goal isn't perfection—it's protection, speed, and simplicity.
This is just the rough-in stage. I’m throwing up full sheets using minimal fasteners, just to get the wall covered and shielded from the elements. Once it's all in place, I’ll go back in with metal shears, a driver, and self-tapping screws to trim, square up, and lock everything down tight.
Why galvanized steel?
🪙 Inexpensive: Especially when compared to wood siding or cement board
🔩 Durable: Weather-resistant and tough against insects and moisture
🛠️ Fast to Install: Large panels go up in minutes with basic tools
🌧️ Immediate Protection: Keeps the rain and wind off while I build the next layer
Here’s what you’ll see in the video:
✔️ Cutting and placing galvanized panels by hand
✔️ Creative solo-building techniques to hold sheets in place
✔️ Notes on tools, fastening strategy, and future trimming
✔️ Realistic expectations—this isn’t pretty yet, but it works
If you’re building something from scratch, or trying to create a shelter without spending a fortune, this approach could save you time, energy, and money. It’s not the final look—but it’s a solid foundation to work from.
This is the kind of thing that makes solo off-grid building possible. It’s not always elegant, but it gets the job done and moves the project forward—one wall, one panel, one screw at a time.
