2009 10 09 Whiteout on Mt Elbrus Russia

July 2008 Mt. Elbrus Russia had poor climbing conditions due mostly to the weather. One group of climbers attempting an ascent was separated from a single climber; who remained alone for several days. A rescue helicopter looking for that climber crashed necessitating a rescue party to rescue the rescuers. The weather didn't let up. But Wally Berg leading our group allowed us to attempt to summit. Along the way we were caught in a whiteout. I'm here with Nadia, a Russian guide who is also an ice climber. She didn't speak English nor I Russian. We were alone on the way up to the saddle, but never made it to the saddle. Along the way we met many climbers who had turned back and encouraged us to do the same. Although denied the summit we did enjoy the tranquility of the climb. Many climbers turned back saying the constant sound of the wind hollowing made them think a train was coming. As they said that day, the wind's relentless roar can drive a climber crazy. Add to that a whiteout and the disorientation can be stifling. For me, I enjoyed it. Right up until we had to turn around. Please enjoy this video and excuse the poor sound quality of me interviewing myself. I used an underwater protective case and it almost completely blocked out the sound. I have the answer to that problem; now can anyone tell me how to get to be a cameraman on Deadliest Catch?
