About this Series
Dry eye syndrome (DES) also known as dry eye disease, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or keratitis sicca, is one of the most common ophthalmic disorders, affecting 10%-30% of the US population, especially those older than 40. While a number of different terms are used to describe the conditions characterized by dry eye, they often overlap and are now collectively referred to as ocular surface disease.
Causes of dry eye, which range from environmental factors to medical conditions, can often challenge physicians in their workup, especially in chronic cases in which patients experience serious and debilitating symptoms.
Ophthalmology specialists at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia explore the complex differential diagnosis of dry eye and the most current treatment strategies for a syndrome whose incidence is growing, given the prevalence of screen time, the wide use of contact lenses and procedures for vision correction, and the increase of our aging population.
