In the Buddha's teaching, the things people desire arise through cause and effect. On one hand, it's possible to plan to put causes into place to get the desired effect. For example parents will often teach their children to be diligent in their studies so that they can get a good job later in life. On another hand, however, the things we desire arise in a more spontaneous way.

The Buddha teaches that when we do good deeds, our mind is becomes attracted to desirable outcomes as a result. When we practise non-anger, the mind is attracted to beauty. When we practise generosity, the mind is attracted to wealth. The interesting thing is, that in consuming desirable things, one can sometimes undercut the quailities that led to their arising. For example a wealthly person can sometimes become stingy in order to protect their wealth. In this way the mind can grasp on to things and consume them, only to suffer when they're gone.

The Buddha's solution to this problem is use the benefical things in our life for the sake of advancing in wholesome qualities to even greater degrees. In the end his path turns in on itself to find something even beyond his path of practice, to a happiness that's unconditioned.
