Diana Ross sings Mahogany and Ain't No Mountain (Feb 27, 2024 - Moody Theater, Austin City Live, TX)

If you've gone to a Diana Ross show in the past several decades (I know that it's hard to digest), You know that she does not do a show without her two legendary #1 songs, "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," which she has ingeniously melded into one iconic finish - usually indicating the end of show (before her encore(s)). Ms. Ross knows the songs the audience came to hear. Of course, she has so many that it is impossible to choose among her vast library of memorable songs. But since the early 2000's, Diana Ross has found a formula of the right tunes that would make for a good show; a formula that she hasn't strayed from much to this day. Die-hard fans know she is gonna start with "I'm Coming Out," do a medley of "Love Hangover/Take Me Higher/Ease On Down The Road," add one or two songs from her film, "Lady Sings The Blues," and end it with a rousing version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"; followed now, with "Thank You," from her latest album. Occasionally, she'll exchange one song for another or surprise us with a tune that she rarely sings live.

And truth be told, there was a time when I was getting tired of hearing the same old songs and seeing the same old costumes and hearing the same old pitter-patter (Do you know this song? When you're watching me, I'm watching you, etc.). But, I'm one of the odd ones who see her at least 10 to 15 times a year! Who does that? Well, would you believe that I'm not the only one?

But somewhere back in time, just before the pandemic, I came to realize that although I may be a little jaded about her shows and I was threatening myself to stop going to her shows, if her next one was the same as the last; but then, I opened my eyes. I was being selfish. There were other people, who rarely saw her live in concert and were ecstatic to hear those songs that I was getting tired of and were thrilled to see those wardrobe changes, that I've seen a hundred times. I have seen several people brace themselves when hearing a song, they had only heard on the radio, and many times, I've seen the tears of joy from those who have heard the songs that helped them get through the good and bad times...like the lady in this video who sat in front of me, at the end of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

"Do You Know Where You're Going To (Theme from Mahogany)" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" are two songs that Diana Ross covered in the 70's. The first by Grammy winner, Telma Houston and the latter by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell - but Ms Ross had managed to make those songs her own. They are iconic!! Diana Ross always shouts out "Go For Your Dreams" at the end of the songs because that is a belief that she wants everyone to do. She knows the joy these songs bring to her fans. I am one of them. The audience is her tribe and she knows how to care for them. Like the mantra she tells her fans to repeat after her, "I'm so grateful, for all the blessings in my life. For there are many. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

And we are grateful for having Ms Ross in our lives for, what will be, 80 years. Her life has been inspirational/ her songs, lifesaving. Beautiful Love.
