John Cougar ~ Hurts So Good 1982 Extended Meow Mix
John Mellencamp was born October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana and immediately became the rebel. Even at a young age, he was very self assured which he now attributes to his upbringing. John says that he "was the runt of the family" as he was smaller in stature than his much bigger father and brothers. He had to work extra hard to get there.
By the age of 18 he had been kicked off the football team for smoking, hating authority figures, often getting into fistfights when he eloped with his 23 year old pregnant girlfriend and moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Her family took them in but John was not serious about getting a job and spent the time wasted and writing songs. Her family kicked him out and in 1975 he went to New York and signed with MCA Records after David Bowie's producer Tony DeFries met with him.
His first album found him with a new name "Johnny Cougar", that left him mortified. He mentions that no one in his life ever knew him called him Johnny. The album did not get much attention and soon John left the label and severed ties with DeFries. He then chatted with Rod Stewart's manager who recommended that John sign with Riva Records. That led to his first hit "I Need A Lover" a #28 pop hit in 1979.
In 1982 he released American Fool and "Hurts So Good" as the first single and it spent four weeks at #2 unable to make Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" blink. The label wasted no time in getting out the eventual #1 pop hit "Jack & Diane" but they did it when "Hurts So Good" was #3 with a bullet. I think that the label should have waited a bit longer, it would have given it a better chance to grab the #1 spot. It did give him TWO simultaneous top ten hits though and that is something.
The chorus melody and lyrics came to him while he was in the shower, and he told his songwriting partner George Green and they completed the song in short order.
The one two punch those two singles powered album sales to the platinum level making "American Fool" the best selling album of 1982.
