Rook had been living on the streets for as long as the local feeders could remember. He was sweet, but clearly worn down by a life spent in survival mode. Then he disappeared. When he finally turned up again, the person who found him called us immediately, because what they were looking at was far beyond anything they could handle alone.

His eye socket is a cavernous hole of black, rotted tissue. It takes up more than half of his face. You cannot see the full depth of the wound without a flashlight. It is that deep, that large, that devastating. He looks miserable. It is a miracle he is still alive.

Our doctors believe Rook took a serious blow to the head at some point, one that was never treated. The wound became infected, then became infested with maggots. By the time he reached us, his eye was already gone, eaten away entirely. There is nothing left to save there. What remains is a wound that requires immediate surgical intervention to remove the damaged tissue and close the site. On top of that, he is malnourished, dehydrated, and carrying a heavy parasite load. He is in tremendous pain.

We are doing wound cleanings now and working to stabilize him before surgery. Every step forward costs money we are spending in real time. The surgery alone will be significant, and that is before accounting for the ongoing care he will need to recover. We will not stop, but we need your help to keep going.
