KUNG FU QUEST 功夫傳奇, Hung Kuen 洪拳正宗 English Subtitles
In this episode of the Kung Fu Quest, Philip Ng interviews various Hung Kuen schools and their masters in both Hong Kong and Europe. Featured together with Shaolin, Wudang, Tai Chi and Wing Chun in the series, Hung Kuen is a prominent style in Chinese Kung Fu. When Kung Fu enthusiasts talk about Nan Quan(Southern Fists), the first school of Kung Fu that comes to mind will be Hung Kuen, also known as Hung Gar Kung Fu internationally.
Why is it such a notable style? Let us take a look at the other styles. Wudang is soft and has great focus on spinning movements. Shaolin is hard and strong but it also has a great emphasis on softness. The stances and footwork are nimble and mobile like a monkey. Wing Chun is a style which involves tight hand and stance movements and soft sticky hands. Tai Chi is a soft style which uses force allocation and connected structure to upset the opponent's balance.
What about Hung Gar? While the rest are soft or half soft, Hung Gar is a hard training, hard hitting style, like rocks and steel bars. Its stances and hands are heavy compared to the Northern Kung Fu styles. Its training flow is from slow and heavy as a beginner, to fast and explosive as an expert. From hard and forceful 'external' training, to being capable of wielding softer and more subtle 'internal' power as an adept.
Its procedure is the opposite of Tai Chi. Tai Chi starts soft and internal, and moves towards harder form and external techniques in advanced levels. For Hung Gar Kung Fu, the student starts from external techniques and strength to soft and internal power when he advances into the Tit Sin Kuen stage after years of training. However, whether is it a slow and heavy punch, or a fast punch, all techniques come from the one foundation, the thousand pound horse stance.
