CHEYENNE WILDCAT stars Wild Bill Elliott as Red Ryder and Bobby Blake as his sidekick, Little Beaver. It’s from the studio known for fast action, Republic Pictures, and this 1944 film delivers.
Based on a very popular comic strip by Fred Harmon that ran from 1938 to 1964, Red Ryder’s first screen incarnation was in a Republic serial, a chapterplay starring Don Barry. That’s how Don got his nickname. For the movie series, Republic put together a great team. Actor William “Wild Bill” Elliott became Red. Elliott had grown up around horses in Kansas but moved to California and got small parts in silent films and early talkies as Gordon Elliott. His big break came in 1938 when Columbia cast him in the 15-chapter serial THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HICKOK and picked up the handle “Wild” Bill Elliott in a series of westerns, famous for saying, “I’m a peaceable man.” A line in today’s film.
Coming straight from MGM’s OUR GANG comedies, little Mickey Gubitosi became actor Bobby Blake who became “Little Beaver.” Actress Alice Fleming was The Dutchess and contract player Peggy Stewart, one of the Queens of Republic, co-starred in the very first Red Ryder with Elliott and continued in several more…as a different character each time!
Republic’s main villain was actor Roy Barcroft. Guess what? He’s up to his old tricks in this film. Other very recognizable performers in this B western are Francis McDonald, Tom London, Keene Duncan and a young, unbilled future bad guy in HIGH NOON, and dozens of other A & B westerns, Robert J. Wilke. Wilke always looked mean but, according to Bobby Blake, he was one of the nicest people on the lot. As you’ll see, Blake does a lot of his own fast riding. There wasn’t a stuntman for him. He always felt intimidated and pushed around and the person who treated him the best was the meanest looking one, Wilke.
The Republic lot is now Studio City where SEINFELD, THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW and even GUNSMOKE were filmed. But, from the mid-1930s until the mid 1950s, it cranked out the best action westerns and serials in Hollywood.
