Secure Boot Root Key Expired: Kernel At Risk? 🔌🛡️
The root of trust for millions of computers has expired, creating a silent security time bomb for firmware security.
In late June, Microsoft’s original 2011 Secure Boot root certificates reached their end of life. These certificates are what your UEFI firmware uses to verify that your operating system bootloader is legitimate and hasn't been compromised. Why write secure code if your system firmware doesn't even trust your own kernel?
While your computer won't suddenly brick itself today, there is a catch. Without updating to the new 2023 certificate store, your system will lose the ability to receive future security updates for the early boot process, leaving your device permanently vulnerable to new bootkit firmware malware. Check your UEFI db store and apply BIOS/firmware updates immediately to protect your kernel.
