Onion harvest 2021 | Deutz-Fahr Agrotron 6215 TTV & MacLouis | Siebring Akkerbouw

Late August and early September is onion time for a lot of Dutch farmers. We see the impressive new harvesting outfit from Dutch arable farm Siebring Akkerbouw at work. Their Deutz-Fahr Agrotron 6215 TTV is using a MacLouis 3m wide topper and front harvester combined with a harvester/windrower at the rear. The onions are put in a windrow to dry for a couple of days before they are loaded up and stored. Normally harvesting is done using tractors on row crop tyres. As farmers want to increase capacity and use larger tractors there needs to be room for wide wheels. By means of a front harvester room is created. The harvester at the rear sieves out all the sand and lifts the inner rows.

Onions are an important crop for Dutch farmers. They are exported all over the world. They are sown in March or April on so-called beds. These vary in width. This machine harvests 1 large bed of 3m with 12 rows of onions. The harvest takes place in August, September and sometimes October. The tops die off and the onion ripes. Once its 'skirts' (the outer leaves of the bulb) have sufficiently dried they are ready for harvest. To further aid drying they are left in the field for a couple of days.
