[LATEST] Zambian Opposition Leader, Hichilema Wins Presidential Poll

Zambia's opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has been declared the winner of the hotly contested presidential election, defeating incumbent Edgar Lungu.

Official results show Mr. Hichilema defeated his main opponent with more than a million votes.

This is Mr. Hichilema's sixth attempt at winning the presidency and his supporters have been celebrating on the streets of the capital, Lusaka.

Edgar Lungu's six-year rule was criticised for alleged human rights abuses, corruption, a failing economy, and massive unemployment.

59-year-old Hakainde Hichilema was, a former CEO at an accounting firm before entering politics and he now faces the task of trying to revive Zambia's fortunes.
