13 MPD officials face termination over crime data

Thirteen Metropolitan Police Department officials in Washington, D.C., are now facing possible termination following an internal investigation into allegations of manipulated crime data.

7News reporter Phylicia Ashley explains where the investigation stands and what happens next for the officials involved. The employees have not been fired and remain on leave while they go through the department’s disciplinary process, which allows them to present evidence before a review panel.

The internal investigation focused on allegations that crime statistics may have been improperly categorized or manipulated within MPD. Attention is now turning to an upcoming inspector general report, which is expected to examine broader systemic issues inside the department that may have allowed the alleged misconduct to occur.

Mayor Muriel Bowser said she still believes overall crime trends show declines in homicides and robberies, but acknowledged that changes and reviews are expected within MPD regarding how crimes are classified and reported.

The investigation remains ongoing.
