Natalia explains how she came to be such a jumping phenom...

I have to ask her: how on earth does she propel herself so high, with such serenity, and with so little apparent preparation?
“When I was at school, I didn’t have that jump. But, when I started at the Bolshoi, the [then] director Alexei Ratmansky started giving me solos and variations – always they involved jumping, and my répétiteur Marina Kondratieva always forced me to jump! Jump! Jump!
“At the time, the Bolshoi had a different aesthetic, but I was not very tall, and not perfectly proportioned – not the prettiest body. Marina understood straight away that if I wanted to achieve something, I had to improve my technique, and she forced me to work on it. Of course, my physique also allows me to do that. Marina said, 'With your strong legs, it would be a shame not to jump!’
“Rehearsing time after time,” she continues, “it was always getting better, until the moment when I thought I was flying. And since then, I’ve never lost that feeling.”
Thank you for watching.
