Modern OTP systems often avoid storing OTPs directly.

Instead, they use deterministic generation.

Example:

✔ Server combines:

User ID
Secret key
Current timestamp

✔ Then generates OTP using algorithms like:

TOTP
HMAC-SHA1

When user enters OTP:

✔ Server regenerates the same OTP
✔ Compares values
✔ No database lookup needed

Since time changes every 30 seconds…
the OTP expires automatically.

That’s how apps like Google Authenticator work.

Benefits:

✅ No OTP storage
✅ Better security
✅ Faster verification
✅ Reduced database dependency

Because scalable authentication systems prefer verification through cryptography — not storage.
