How to Paint Sunlight

Last week we looked at a photo of a road and analyzed it for structure. We talked about the composition, structure, and the foundation of a painting before you begin to paint. We are trying to avoid getting “stuck” halfway through a painting!

The photo last week was in fact a structure of bands of sunlight and shadow. This week, I demonstrate blocking-in the image & painting it.

I show that to paint sunshine, you have to keep in mind the two families of warm-light and dark-cool color, and to keep them apart!

Because the design relies on such broad bands of sunlight and shadow, it presents a clear example of how to paint sunlight.

My palette: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Permanent, Quinacridone Magenta, Dioxazine Purple, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Chrome Oxide Green, Phthalo Green.
