Obesity - the clash between two realities: Warren Peters at TEDxLaSierraUniversity

What once saved us now kills us. With a powerful personal story Dr. Warren Peters sheds new light on the reality, biology, and brain chemistry behind obesity and shows us how to overcome our addiction to food.

Dr. Peters meets his patients every day with a broad smile and a passion to make complex things simple, so people can make those difficult healthy lifestyle changes which will enhance their wellbeing.

If asked, he will tell you that the first section of his medical career was in general surgery, where "if something is wrong with you, I will cut it out". The next section was totally dedicated to lifestyle and natural medicines, where "if something is wrong with you, just try harder". And finally, the last part of his career is dedicated to the molecular and genetic basis of obesity, "where if something is wrong with you, it is the fault of your parents and the changing environment". Within these three perspectives, reside the virtues of common sense and wisdom.

He obtained his medical degree from Loma Linda University, his surgical training at the Mason Clinic in Seattle Washington, and, his Master's degree in biostatistics and epidemiology from Loma Linda University. He is privileged to travel and lecture nationally and internationally on topics of nutrition, wholeness, and wellness. He has practiced surgical care, wholistic care, and, primary care in Washington, Maryland, Virginia, and California.

Dr. Peters gives much credit to his educator father, J.V. Peters, who insisted that his young son become proficient in the trades of dairy farming, the building trades, custom upholstery, and commercial salmon fishing before seeking his medical career. Working with your hands gives meaning to working with your mind.

Warren Peters finds joy and meaning in his life as he stimulates and challenges the young minds of tomorrow's medical professions, who will go far beyond the current levels of biological understanding and human empathy. He often warns his students that he has only a few hours to bring alive within them, the sense of curiosity and wonder in their interactions with fellow human beings.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
