Oj Maricka Peglaj (Oh Marie Polka): Here we have a Slovenian folk song performed on a German designed accordion that is built in China and is predominantly associated with Mexican conjunto music played by an American musician of Austrian and Italian lineage. The translation of the verses most commonly sung by American Slovenians are about household chores that Mary is doing. It's a work song as found commonly in every culture's folk songs. In Slovenia, it's more commonly recorded as Mi Se Mamo Radi and is performed by popular Oberkrainer bands. In the USA, Frankie Yankovic included it on one of his popular Columbia recordings in the 1940s and it's a standard of the polka band repertoires ever since.

I've been playing this student model Hohner Panther (G-C-F key combination) in lessons with students lately and decided I should test drive it in a performance video. The configuration of the right hand is different from all of my other diatonic button accordions in that it doesn't have a "gleichtone" same tone or pivot tone in the middle of the 2nd and 3rd rows (and most of my other diatonic boxes are 4 row models.) It also has a slightly different configuration on the counter bass row of the left hand, and doesn't have the helikon reeds that are preferred in the alpine instruments. Those differences also give benefits. The keyboard is in the style of the Hohner Coronas, that are the standard bearer of conjunto and tejano players (starting with Flaco Jimenez and leading up to Josh Baca, Percy Cardona, Michael Guerra and Sunny Sauceda). The setup of the keyboard gives a different feel to the playing- and affects the style for me. I'm sort of approaching this performance with a hybrid Cleveland-Slovenian/ Texas Conjunto flair and hopefully aspects of both of those show up in a fashion that appeals to both audiences, rather than alienating both audiences!
