This 90s research changed everything

Sometimes, it takes decades to fully see how science will change our lives.

Our knowledge of structural biology paid off massively during the pandemic, when scientists were able to quickly work out the structure of the coronavirus’ spike protein and design vaccines and antibodies to fight it.

We can trace this success back to the 90s and early 2000s, when computers were getting more powerful and so the possibilities of structural biology started to take off.

In this period, we opened six new UK research centres for structural biology and helped build the Diamond Light Source, which creates light billions of times brighter than the sun to study tiny things. We also supported scientific computing facilities to store and analyse the enormous amounts of data generated by this research.
