If you want to know how to tell if someone is using you or not, you have to first look at that person's personality and your history with them. Do you think that your ex has it in them to use you? Have you ever seen them use other people in their lives?

If so, then that could very well be one of the signs you are your ex's backup.

But beyond that, I would actually be quite surprised if your ex was using you. At least intentionally. They are probably just afraid to make real changes in their life and they are slowly edging toward those changes. This may come across as them using you, but really, they are likely not intentionally doing it.

So, take a deep breath. And calmly remind yourself that your ex is unlikely using you as a backup. Unless of course you believe that they might have the capacity to intentionally do this sort of thing.
