RBG, Civil Rights, and Trees: What Was on Their “Gender Ideology” List?

At the May 2026 Anderson County Library Board meeting, board members discussed the list of books labeled as containing “gender ideology.”

The list was so broad that board members mentioned a Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography, books about the civil rights movement, and a book about planting trees in India.

That is the danger of using vague political labels to govern public libraries. Once the standard is unclear, almost anything can be swept into suspicion.

This was not a careful review of obscene material. It was a political dragnet.
