Titian's masterpiece. Francis I. A portrait without the artist having ever seen the model.

The profile is reminiscent of representations of Roman emperors. It is mainly explained by the fact that Titian was inspired by a medal engraved by Benvenuto Cellini in Fontainebleau in 1537, in the absence of being able to observe the model. This archaism does not prevent the artist from infusing the expression with an energy full of grandeur and bonhomie, and thus creating one of the most famous images of the sovereign.
