The Fantaisie-Impromptu is one of Chopin's most beloved and technically exhilarating solo piano works, composed in 1835 but withheld from publication during his lifetime and released posthumously as Op. 66. Its outer sections pit a perpetual-motion torrent of sixteenth-note triplets in the right hand against steady quadruplet figures in the left, creating a mesmerizing rhythmic tension of three against four that demands exceptional independence between the hands. At its heart lies one of Chopin's most tender and singing melodies in D♭ Major — a lyrical contrast of such warmth and simplicity that it later inspired the popular song I'm Always Chasing Rainbows — before the stormy opening returns to close the piece with breathtaking intensity.
